Museon Arlaten - musée de Provence

Excellent

The Museon Arlaten, a departmental museum of ethnography created at the end of the 19th century by the poet Frédéric Mistral, is a "place of memory" of Provencal society.

After 11 years of closure, the museum has been thoroughly renovated and is now open to the public again. Respectful of the Mistralian heritage and of more than a century of museographic history, the Museon Arlaten-musée de Provence offers a brand new experience of visit among 3500 objects, costumes and paintings. Thanks to a variety of scenographies and a number of multimedia devices, it offers an almost infinite choice of possibilities for further exploration and discovery.

From the 18th century to multimedia

Founded in 1899 by Frédéric Mistral, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and champion of the Provençal language and culture, the Museon Arlaten, a "poet's museum" and "museum of living life", has been closed to the public since 2009.
While the dioramas, 18th, 19th and 20th century costumes, the Tarasque, festive objects, furniture and earthenware, shepherds, amulets, the works and the spirit of Mistral are still present, the scenographies have been revisited to be sometimes faithful to the original, sometimes endowed with a new historical depth. The public will also be able to discover the results of ethnographic surveys on today's Provence carried out by the museum's teams.
Nearly sixty digital devices (videos, texts, readings in Provençal, sounds, games, music, multimedia creations and frescoes, etc.) bring to life the Provence of yesteryear and evoke the Provence of today with relish.

A unique and inspired place

To cross the threshold of the Museon Arlaten is to enter a place shaped by two thousand years of history! The end of the Forum in Roman times (a set of Roman remains, an exedra, columns, a street, pavements and pavements are still visible in the museum courtyard), an aristocratic residence during the Renaissance, a Jesuit college from the 17th to 18th centuries, prison and place of debate during the French Revolution, again a college and then a museum, today renovated, the Museon Arlaten is a major witness to the architecture and history of Arles from Antiquity to the 21st century.

Thanks to the renovation, two new architectural features have been added to enhance the visit:

- the grand staircase, designed by the architect of the renovation, Michel Bertreux (Tetrarc agency), is enhanced by two creations by Christian Lacroix. Distributing all the floors, its decoration was conceived by the great Arles designer as "a gesture of gratitude and love" for the collections of the Museon Arlaten, here assembled and freely recomposed in two large backlit glass totems.

- The Jesuit Chapel, completely restored, is finally attached to the museum and will provide a sumptuous setting and volume for temporary exhibitions.

For its location, for its collections, for the journey back in time offered as well as for its contemporary outlook, the Museon Arlaten-Musée de Provence is an essential step in any journey of discovery of the riches of the city of Arles.
