LUMA ARLES PROJECT AT THE PARC DES ATELIERS

Luma Arles is a cross-disciplinary cultural platform located at the Parc des Ateliers in Arles, an old industrial wasteland undergoing major transformations. As a center of research, production and experimentation, Luma Arles is an ecosystem where artists, thinkers, scientists and civil society stakeholders work together for an expansive understanding of environmental issues, human rights, creation and education.
Luma Arles includes an Arts Resource Building designed with architect Frank Gehry; various industrial buildings rehabilitated with Selldorf Architects; and a public park designed with landscape architect Bas Smets.
In anticipation of its completion (the site’s main building designed with Gehry will open in 2020), Maja Hoffmann works closely with the Luma Arles Core Group (Tom Eccles, Liam Gillick, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Philippe Parreno, and Beatrix Ruf) on a program of exhibitions and cross-disciplinary projects presented each year in the site’s newly rehabilitated venues of the Grande Halle, the Forges, the Mécanique Générale and the Formation.
In a public park of more than 40,000 m2 inspired by the unique landscape of the Camargue, the Crau and the Alpilles, the Arts Resource center and the rehabilitated buildings form an archipelago with different facilities: presentation and exhibition spaces, archive spaces, artists residencies, seminar rooms, library, design research laboratory, educational spaces, restaurants…
This cultural platform is turned towards the artistic, cultural, ecologic, social and economic energies of Arles and Camargue, in the Rhône delta, through constant exchange and connection with the world and its evolution.
